Cool Facts
What orthodontists do. Orthodontists are specially trained dentists who help straighten crooked teeth and fix how your jaws line up together. They use braces, retainers, and other tools to gently move your teeth into better positions over time.
Braces work slowly. Braces use steady, gentle pressure to guide teeth into straighter positions. This process usually takes between one to three years because teeth move slowly and safely through your jawbone.
It's about more than looks. While straight teeth look great, orthodontics also helps you chew better, speak more clearly, and keep your teeth healthier by making them easier to clean.
Starting early helps. Many kids get braces between ages 8 and 14 when permanent teeth are coming in, because young jaws are still growing and easier to guide into the right shape.
Retainers keep progress. After braces come off, retainers hold teeth in their new positions so they don't slowly shift back to where they started.
