Straddling two continents. Azerbaijan sits right at the boundary between Western Asia and Eastern Europe, making it a true bridge between the two regions.

Capital city Baku. Baku, the capital, is the country's largest city and sits on the shore of the Caspian Sea, the world's largest inland body of water.

Mountain neighbors. Azerbaijan is surrounded by mountains and countries on most sides, with Russia's Dagestan to the north, Georgia to the northwest, Turkey and Armenia to the west, and Iran to the south.

Caspian Sea access. The Caspian Sea forms Azerbaijan's eastern border and is important for trade, fishing, and valuable natural resources like oil.

Historic oil fields. Azerbaijan has been famous for centuries for its oil and natural gas resources, which come from deep beneath the ground and the Caspian Sea.
