Powerful stone launcher. A ballista used twisted ropes and wood to store up energy, then released it all at once to fire rocks or large bolts across the battlefield. Some could hurl stones the size of a person's head over long distances.

Ancient engineering marvel. Roman and Greek soldiers designed ballistae with careful math and skill, using the same twisting-rope power system that medieval catapults would later use. It was one of the first machines built specifically to throw things hard and far.

Siege weapon favorite. Armies used ballistae to defend castle walls and break through enemy defenses from a safe distance. A single ballista could keep enemy soldiers from getting too close to the gates.

Bolt vs. stone. Different ballistae were designed for different jobs, some shooting sharp bolts like giant arrows to pierce armor, while others launched heavy stones to smash walls and structures.
