Bar Mitzvah and Bat Mitzvah

A major milestone. A bar mitzvah is for boys and a bat mitzvah is for girls. These Jewish ceremonies mark the moment when young people are seen as adults in their faith community and become responsible for following Jewish laws and values.

Responsibility shifts. Before the ceremony, parents are responsible for their child's actions. After the bar or bat mitzvah, the young person takes responsibility for their own choices and must follow Jewish law themselves.

A family celebration. Traditionally, the child's father thanks God that he is no longer responsible for his child's sins. Families often celebrate with parties and gatherings to honor this important transition.

Reading from the Torah. Young people preparing for bar or bat mitzvah study Hebrew and learn to read from the Torah, the holiest Jewish text. They often lead prayers and readings during the ceremony.
