Tsukimi: Japan's Moon-Viewing Festival

Full moon party. Tsukimi celebrates the full moon on the 15th day of the eighth month in the traditional Japanese calendar, which falls in September or October today. Families and friends gather outside to admire the bright autumn moon together.

Special treats. People enjoy moon-viewing dumplings called dango and eat autumn foods like chestnuts and sweet potatoes during the celebration. These foods are arranged as offerings to give thanks for the harvest.

Bamboo decorations. Homes and gardens are decorated with bamboo branches and autumn flowers to create a festive atmosphere for moon-viewing. These decorations honor the beauty of the season.

Two moon celebrations. There are actually two tsukimi festivals: the main one on the 15th (Jūgoya) celebrates the full moon, while a second celebration on the 13th of the ninth month (Jūsan'ya) honors the waxing moon.
