Corn Detective. Barbara McClintock spent her whole career studying maize (corn) chromosomes under a microscope. She developed special techniques to see these tiny structures clearly and unlock the secrets they held about how traits pass from one generation to the next.
Genes Can Jump. McClintock discovered something amazing: genes don't always stay in the same spot on a chromosome. Sometimes they can move to different locations, which can change how a plant looks or behaves. This was such a surprising idea that many scientists didn't believe it at first.
Genetic Crossing Over. She proved that during reproduction, chromosomes swap pieces of information with each other, a process called crossing-over. This mixing and matching of genetic material is how offspring get a unique combination of traits from both parents.
Late Recognition. McClintock's work was so important that she won the Nobel Prize in 1983, long after she made her discoveries. By then, scientists had finally understood that her wild ideas were absolutely correct all along.
Chromosome Landmarks. McClintock identified important regions on chromosomes called telomeres and centromeres. These special spots act like anchors and labels, helping keep genetic information organized and safe so it passes correctly to the next generation.
