Cool Facts
Epic name change. This fish has so many names depending on where you live, Asian sea bass, giant sea perch, and sea lates are all the same amazing fish. Scientists call it barramundi, which comes from an Aboriginal Australian word.
Two homes, one life. Barramundi are catadromous, which means they're born in the ocean but swim upstream into rivers as adults. When it's time to breed, they travel back to the salty sea to start the whole cycle again.
Huge territory. These fish live across the Indo-West Pacific Ocean, from the Middle East all the way through South Asia, Southeast Asia, East Asia, and down to Oceania. That's an enormous range of tropical and subtropical waters.
Giant and strong. The barramundi can grow into a truly large fish with a silvery body perfect for hunting in deep water. They're powerful swimmers that can handle both freshwater rivers and salty ocean environments.
