A geography mystery. Basque is spoken in the Basque Country, a region that straddles the westernmost Pyrenees mountains between southwestern France and northern Spain. Most speakers live on the Spanish side, with about 51,000 speakers in France.

The lonely language. Basque is the only known language isolate in all of Europe, meaning it doesn't belong to any language family and isn't related to any other living language. Scientists still debate where it came from.

How many speakers?. About 806,000 people speak Basque today. That's roughly 756,000 in Spain and 51,000 in France, making it a living language that communities continue to use and teach.

Ancient roots. The Basques are indigenous to the Basque Country, meaning they have lived there for thousands of years. This long history might explain why their language is so different from everything around it.
