City on islands. Venice sits on 126 islands in northeastern Italy, surrounded by water instead of land. The islands are separated by canals that work just like streets.

Boats instead of cars. Since there are no roads, people travel through Venice's canals in boats called gondolas. These long, narrow boats are the main way to get around the city.

Famous for beauty. Venice is known all over the world for its stunning architecture, art, and history. It was once a powerful republic that traded with other countries for hundreds of years.

Sinking slowly. Venice is slowly sinking into the sea because the islands are made of soft mud that compresses over time. People are working on ways to protect the city from flooding.
