The Baths of Caracalla

Enormous bathing complex. The Baths of Caracalla were the second largest Roman public bath complex ever built, located right in the heart of Rome. They could hold thousands of visitors at once, making them one of the most important gathering places in the city.

Built for emperors. Construction started around AD 212 under Emperor Septimius Severus and was completed by his son Emperor Caracalla around 216 or 217. These were among the most impressive buildings in the entire Roman Empire.

More than just baths. The complex included hot, warm, and cold water pools, exercise areas, libraries, and even gardens. Romans spent hours here not just getting clean, but socializing, exercising, and enjoying luxury.

Lasted over 300 years. The baths operated continuously from when they were built until around the 530s, when they were eventually abandoned and fell into ruins. That's more than three centuries of daily use by thousands of Romans.
