Principal organizer of the March on Washington. In 1963, Bayard Rustin was the main person behind organizing the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, one of the largest protests for civil rights in American history. He worked out all the details to make sure over 250,000 people could gather safely and peacefully.

Believed in nonviolence. Rustin was a strong believer in peaceful protest instead of fighting back with violence. He helped teach other civil rights activists how to protest without causing harm, even when faced with people who disagreed with them.

Fought for multiple causes. Rustin didn't just work for civil rights for Black Americans, he also stood up for gay rights, workers' rights, and against war. He believed that all kinds of injustice and unfairness needed to be challenged.
