Ruled a massive empire. Ashoka was the third emperor of the Mauryan dynasty and controlled a huge empire covering much of the Indian subcontinent, stretching from what is now Afghanistan all the way to Bangladesh.
Changed his heart. Early in his reign, Ashoka was a fierce warrior, but he eventually became devoted to Buddhism and completely changed the way he ruled and lived.
Spread Buddhism everywhere. Ashoka used his power and wealth to help Buddhism grow across ancient Asia, making him one of the most important figures in Buddhism's history.
Left messages in stone. Ashoka had his laws and beliefs carved onto rocks and pillars throughout his empire so that everyone could read his messages about peace and kindness.
Ruled from a grand capital. His empire's capital was Pataliputra, a major city that was one of the most important centers of power in the ancient world.
