Founder of Yuan Dynasty. Kublai Khan started the Yuan dynasty in 1271 and became the first emperor of a brand new Chinese kingdom ruled by Mongols. He called it the 'Great Yuan' and controlled it for over 20 years.
Conquered China. Kublai Khan didn't just inherit power, he conquered the entire country of China and brought it under Mongol rule. This made him one of the most powerful rulers in the whole world at that time.
Two Royal Names. Kublai Khan had a temple name (Emperor Shizu) and a regnal name (Setsen Khan) that showed his importance in both Mongol and Chinese traditions. Different names meant different things to different people in his empire.
Part of a Bigger Empire. Kublai Khan was part of the massive Mongol Empire that his ancestors had built across Asia. Even though he ruled China, he was connected to Mongol leaders and traditions from far away lands.
