The Cotton Gin. In 1793, Eli Whitney created a machine called the cotton gin that separated seeds from cotton fibers much faster than people could by hand. This invention made cotton farming incredibly profitable and became one of the most important machines of the Industrial Revolution.

Patent Problems. Even though Whitney invented the cotton gin, he didn't make much money from it because people copied his design and he had to spend years fighting legal battles to protect his invention. By the time he won these fights, many others had already built their own versions.

Making Muskets. After struggling with the cotton gin lawsuits, Whitney shifted his focus to making firearms for the U.S. Army. He spent the rest of his life manufacturing muskets and developing new inventions for the government until he died in 1825.

Factory Pioneer. Whitney didn't just invent machines, he also helped develop new ways of manufacturing at his factories, making products more efficiently than ever before. These factory methods became a model for how American manufacturing would work for generations.
