Mapped the ocean floor. In the 1950s, Marie Tharp worked with geologist Bruce Heezen to create the first detailed scientific map of the Atlantic Ocean floor. This was like discovering an entire landscape that humans had never seen before.

Found underwater mountains. Her maps revealed that the ocean floor was not flat and boring. Instead, it had huge mountain ranges, deep valleys, and other dramatic features hidden beneath the water.

Changed our understanding of Earth. Marie's cartography helped scientists understand how the continents moved and how the Earth's crust worked. Her work was essential evidence for the theory of plate tectonics, which explains how Earth's surface is always slowly shifting.

Pioneered a new field. Marie was one of the first women to work in oceanography and cartography at a high level. She proved that women could make groundbreaking discoveries in science and geology.
