Airship genius. Santos-Dumont designed and built the first powered airships, which were like balloons with engines and steering controls. He proved that people could actually steer and control aircraft in the sky.

Circled the Eiffel Tower. In 1901, he flew his airship No. 6 around the Eiffel Tower in Paris and won the famous Deutsch prize. Thousands of people watched this incredible feat, and he became one of the most famous people in the world almost overnight.

Rich coffee heir. Santos-Dumont was born into a wealthy Brazilian family that made money from coffee plantations. This wealth allowed him to spend his life inventing and experimenting with aircraft instead of needing a regular job.

Paris inventor. He spent most of his adult life in Paris, France, which was the center of early aviation experiments. Many of his greatest achievements happened in the skies above Paris.

Both types of aircraft. Santos-Dumont was special because he contributed to the development of both lighter-than-air craft (airships and balloons) and heavier-than-air craft (like modern airplanes). Very few people worked successfully with both types.
