King of Sparta. Leonidas I ruled the powerful city-state of Sparta starting around 489 BC. He was the 17th king of the Agiad dynasty, one of Sparta's two royal houses.

Famous warrior leader. Leonidas is remembered as one of history's greatest military commanders, known for his courage and tactical skill in defending his people.

Ruled with a partner. Like all Spartan kings, Leonidas didn't rule alone. He shared power with another king named Leotychidas II, which was a unique Spartan tradition.

Claimed divine descent. The Agiad dynasty that Leonidas belonged to claimed they were descendants of Heracles, the legendary Greek hero with superhuman strength.

Dynasty continued after him. When Leonidas died in 480 BC, his young son Pleistarchus became king and continued the Agiad line.
