Brilliant Self-Teacher. Granville Woods taught himself about machines and electricity without going to school for it. He became the first African American mechanical and electrical engineer after the Civil War, proving that passion and hard work could open incredible doors.

Train Communication Expert. Most of Granville's inventions focused on trains and streetcars because he wanted to make them safer and better. He realized that these vehicles needed better ways to talk to each other and to stations, so he created devices to solve that problem.

Telegraph Master Inventor. His most famous invention was the Synchronous Multiplex Railway Telegraph, which let trains send messages back and forth to stations. The clever part was that it used electricity that was already floating around in telegraph wires, so it didn't need extra power sources.

Patent Powerhouse. Granville Woods received more than 50 patents for his inventions during his lifetime. Each patent protected his creative ideas and showed how much he contributed to making trains and transportation safer.
