Buffalo hunter and leader. Sitting Bull was born around 1831 and grew up hunting buffalo on the Great Plains with the Hunkpapa Lakota people. He became respected for his hunting skills, bravery, and wisdom.
Defended his lands. As the U.S. government tried to take over Lakota territory and force Native Americans onto reservations, Sitting Bull led his people in resistance. He fought to keep their traditional way of life alive.
Brought tribes together. Sitting Bull united different Lakota bands and even worked with other tribes to stand against the government's policies. Many people looked to him for leadership and guidance.
Feared for Ghost Dance. The U.S. government worried that Sitting Bull would join a spiritual movement called the Ghost Dance. In 1890, police tried to arrest him and he was killed during the struggle.
Remembered as a symbol. Today, Sitting Bull is remembered as a courageous leader who fought for his people's freedom and way of life. He remains an important figure in Native American history.
