Language keepers. Berbers speak Berber languages, which are part of the Afroasiatic language family. These languages have been spoken in North Africa for thousands of years and remain an important part of Berber identity today.

Across North Africa. Berber people live across a huge area of North Africa, including Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, and Egypt. They have adapted to many different environments, from mountains to deserts to coastal areas.

Ancient civilization. Berbers are indigenous to North Africa, meaning they were there before many other groups arrived. They have a rich history spanning thousands of years with their own traditions, art, and ways of living.

Diverse cultures. While connected by language and heritage, Berber communities have different customs, clothing styles, and traditions depending on where they live. This diversity shows how adaptable and creative Berber people have been throughout history.

Also called Amazighs. The word Amazigh means free person in the Berber language, and it is the name many Berber people use for themselves. Imazighen is the plural form of this word.
