Marsupials with pouches. Bilbies are marsupials, which means the mothers carry their babies in a pouch, just like kangaroos do. Baby bilbies are born tiny and helpless, then grow safely inside mom's pouch for several months.

Huge ears for listening. Bilbies have enormous ears that make up a huge part of their body. These super-sensitive ears help them listen for insects moving underground and hear predators coming from far away, which is super useful in the quiet desert.

Desert night hunters. Bilbies live in the dry Australian outback and only come out at night when it is cooler. They use their long snouts and sharp claws to dig into the ground and hunt for insects, grubs, roots, and small animals to eat.

Sadly endangered now. Bilbies used to be common across Australia, but today they are endangered because introduced animals like foxes and rabbits took over their habitat. Conservation efforts are working hard to protect the remaining bilby populations in the wild.
