Black-Crowned Night Heron

Night shift hunter. Unlike most herons that hunt during the day, black-crowned night herons wait until dusk and nighttime to search for food. They use their large eyes to see in the dark and catch fish, frogs, and insects along waterways.

Found almost everywhere. These herons live across Europe, Asia, Africa, North America, South America, and Australia. They've spread to nearly every part of the world, making them one of the most widespread heron species.

Dark crown feathers. These herons get their name from the black cap on their head. They also have pale eyes and a stocky build that makes them look different from tall, slender herons.

Close cousins in Australia. In Australia and nearby regions, a similar species called the Nankeen night heron lives in their place. These two species are so closely related that they sometimes have babies together where they meet.

Patient and quiet. Night herons often rest during the day in trees or bushes, then become active hunters when the sun sets. They are quieter and calmer than many other heron species.
