Cool Facts
Incredibly hot and bright. Blue supergiants are among the brightest stars we know, burning so intensely that they glow with a brilliant blue-white color. They're much hotter than our Sun, making them some of the most luminous objects in space.
Massive stellar giants. These stars are enormous in size, with diameters many times larger than our Sun. Despite being so gigantic, they're still incredibly hot throughout, which is what gives them their distinctive blue color.
Rare and short-lived. Blue supergiants are relatively rare because they live fast and burn out quickly. They only exist for a few million years before they eventually explode as supernovas.
Classified by brightness. Astronomers sort blue supergiants by their luminosity class (how bright they are) and spectral class (what their light reveals about their composition). This helps scientists understand how massive and hot each one truly is.
