Ancient Gospel Book. Created around the year 800 AD, the Book of Kells is a Latin manuscript containing the four Gospels, which are the biblical stories of Jesus' life and teachings. It also includes special introductory pages and helpful reference tables for readers.

Dazzling Decorations. This manuscript is famous for its incredible illumination, meaning the pages are decorated with shimmering colors, intricate patterns, and stunning illustrations that took artists months or even years to create by hand.

Made in Monasteries. Monks at Columban monasteries in Ireland and Scotland worked together to create this book, possibly with help from multiple monasteries across both countries. These religious communities were centers of learning and artistic skill.

Perfect Handwriting. The Book of Kells is considered a masterpiece of Western calligraphy, meaning the handwriting itself is so skillfully and beautifully done that it became a standard of excellence that artists still admire today.

Named for Its Home. The manuscript takes its name from the Abbey of Kells in County Meath, Ireland, where it was kept safe and treasured for hundreds of years.
