Ancient roots. Long before the 1800s, ancient Greeks and Romans set up colonies in North Africa, similar to how they colonised parts of Europe and Asia. Some of these settlements lasted for hundreds of years.
The big rush (1884-1914). During a period called the Scramble for Africa, European powers raced to claim as much African territory as possible in just 30 years. By 1914, almost the entire continent was under European control.
Conquering kingdoms. European nations didn't just trade with African states, they used military power and modern weapons to take over African kingdoms and societies that had ruled themselves for centuries.
Then came freedom. After World War II ended in 1945, African peoples fought back and demanded their independence. Over the following decades, colonised nations gained their freedom and became self-governing again.
A continent transformed. Colonisation completely changed Africa's borders, languages, cultures, and politics in ways that still matter today, creating both challenges and unexpected connections between Africa and Europe.
