Massive rotating wheel. The machine has a giant wheel lined with bucket-shaped scoops that spin continuously to dig into the ground. As the wheel turns, each bucket fills with dirt and rock, then dumps its load onto a conveyor belt.

Taller than buildings. Some bucket-wheel excavators are taller than 20-story buildings and weigh as much as 13,000 cars. They're so enormous that workers sometimes live in cabins built right onto the machine during long mining jobs.

Finds valuable minerals. These machines work in open-pit mines to remove layers of earth and uncover treasures like coal, iron ore, copper, and gold. They're used all over the world wherever companies need to dig up minerals from the ground.

Moves tons daily. A single bucket-wheel excavator can move 218,500 tons of material in just one day, which would take hundreds of trucks weeks to haul. The continuous rotation makes them incredibly efficient workers.

Complex and precise. Engineers carefully design each bucket-wheel excavator for its specific mine, because different minerals are found at different depths and angles. The machine must work for 10 to 20 years before needing replacement.
