Surprisingly long legs. Burrowing owls have unusually long legs for an owl, which helps them walk and hunt on the ground in open grasslands and deserts where there are few trees.

Borrows homes underground. These owls don't dig their own burrows. Instead, they move into burrows that other animals like badgers, foxes, and prairie dogs have already dug and abandoned.

Found in the Americas. Burrowing owls live across open landscapes in North and South America, from grasslands to deserts, always in areas with low vegetation where they can see far and hunt easily.

Small but mighty. Despite being one of the tiniest owls, burrowing owls are skilled hunters that can fly very well, even though they prefer to spend most of their time on the ground walking and hunting.
