Ancient flutterers. The oldest butterfly fossils scientists have found are about 56 million years old, which means butterflies have been around since ancient times, long before humans existed.

Rainbow wings. Butterflies are famous for their large, brightly colored wings that come in almost every color you can imagine, from deep blues to brilliant oranges and iridescent purples.

Wings that fold. When butterflies rest, they fold their two pairs of wings together like closing a book, which helps protect the delicate colors underneath from getting damaged.
