The Byzantine Empire

A Roman continuation. The Byzantine Empire was really the Eastern Roman Empire that kept going after Rome fell in the west. People who lived there called themselves Romans, not Byzantines, because they saw themselves as the true keepers of Rome's legacy.

Constantinople was everything. The empire's heart was the amazing city of Constantinople, which sits where Europe and Asia meet. This location made it a crossroads for trade, ideas, and cultures from all directions.

Lasted over 1,000 years. While the Western Roman Empire crumbled in the 5th century, the Byzantine Empire survived and thrived for more than a thousand years. It finally fell to the Ottoman Empire in 1453, making it one of history's longest-lasting empires.

Named after it ended. Interestingly, nobody called it the 'Byzantine Empire' while it existed. Historians only gave it that name centuries after it fell, using 'Byzantium,' an old name for Constantinople.

Cultural powerhouse. The Byzantine Empire created stunning art, architecture, and preserved ancient knowledge during the Middle Ages. They built incredible churches with domes, created beautiful mosaics, and kept learning alive when much of Europe was in darkness.
