Converts rotation to motion. A cam takes circular spinning motion and transforms it into linear back-and-forth motion. This simple trick is used in engines, clocks, and countless machines to make things move in specific patterns.
Often part of a wheel. A cam is usually attached to a rotating shaft or wheel. As the wheel spins, the cam's special shape pushes on a lever called a follower, creating movement that follows a precise path.
Can deliver powerful strikes. A simple cam tooth can deliver repeated pulses of power, like in a steam hammer where each time the tooth comes around, it delivers a powerful blow. This was how factories powered many tools before electricity.
Makes smooth motion possible. An eccentric disc or specially shaped cam can produce smooth, continuous back-and-forth motion rather than jerky impacts. This smooth control is why cams work so well in modern engines and machinery.
Timed machines precisely. Cam timers were used to control electric machines before computers existed. As the cam rotated, its shape would push switches on and off at exactly the right moments to control when things happened.
