Cool Facts
Diesel fuel power. Diesel locomotives burn diesel fuel in an engine to create the power needed to move heavy trains. This is different from older steam locomotives that used coal and fire.
Two main types. The most common diesel locomotives are diesel-electric, which use the engine to make electricity that powers the wheels, or diesel-hydraulic, which use fluid pressure to transfer power to the wheels.
Super strong pullers. Diesel locomotives can pull trains with hundreds of tons of cargo, making them perfect for moving freight like coal, cars, and containers across long distances.
Still used today. Even though they're not new, diesel locomotives are still the most common type of locomotive used on railways around the world today.
