Cool Facts
Ancient light sources. Before candles, people used open flames and oil lamps to see in the dark. Candles were a major upgrade because they burned cleaner and lasted longer, making nighttime safer and more productive.
Invented separately everywhere. Different cultures around the world figured out how to make candles on their own without copying each other. This happened because every civilization needed light and had access to materials like animal fat or plant wax.
Animal fat candles. Early candles were made by melting down fat from animals like cows and sheep, then dipping plant fibers into the warm liquid. These tallow candles worked well but smelled pretty bad when they burned.
Beeswax treasure. Beeswax candles burned much cleaner and smelled better than animal fat, but they cost way more money because bees had to make the wax naturally. Only rich people and churches could usually afford them.
Changed the world. Candles let people work and read after sunset, which meant longer work days and more time for activities. This simple invention helped shape how humans organized their daily lives for thousands of years.
