A legendary city. Mycenae was a major center of power in ancient Greece around 3,500 years ago, famous for its strong walls and wealthy rulers who controlled much of the Mediterranean region.

Built on a hilltop. The ancient city sits on a hill 274 metres high in northeastern Greece, about 120 kilometres southwest of Athens, making it a natural fortress that was easy to defend.

Famous Lion Gate. Mycenae is known for its impressive stone gate decorated with carved lions, one of the oldest monumental sculptures in Europe that still stands today.

Home of mighty rulers. According to ancient Greek legends, Mycenae was the kingdom of King Agamemnon, the legendary leader who fought in the famous Trojan War.

Treasures discovered. Archaeologists have found incredible golden masks, jewels, and pottery in Mycenae's tombs, showing how rich and sophisticated the ancient Mycenaean people were.
