First practical automobile. Carl Benz created the Benz Patent-Motorwagen in 1885, which was the very first car that actually worked well enough for people to use every day. It had an engine, wheels, and steering just like modern cars do.

Got the patent. In 1886, Benz received an official patent for his motorcar, which meant the government recognized his invention as completely new and original. This same year, he drove it publicly for the first time.

Made cars in factories. Benz didn't just build one car, he was the first person to make cars in a factory so many people could buy them. This is called series production, and it's how cars are still made today.

Skilled engineer. Benz was trained as an engine designer, so he understood how to build machines that could turn fuel into power. His knowledge of engines helped him create something no one else had made before.

Changed the world. Benz's invention started the age of automobiles and completely transformed how people live, work, and travel around the world.
