Powerful Roman Emperor. Marcus Aurelius ruled Rome from 161 to 180 AD, during a time called the Pax Romana when the empire was peaceful and stable. He was one of the last and greatest emperors Rome ever had.

Stoic Philosopher. Marcus Aurelius believed in Stoicism, a philosophy that taught people to stay calm, accept what they cannot control, and focus on being virtuous. He wrote down his personal thoughts about life in a famous book called Meditations.

Peaceful Rule. During Marcus Aurelius's reign, the Roman Empire experienced relative peace and stability, continuing a golden age that had lasted over 200 years. This peaceful period ended after his rule, making him the last emperor of this special time.

Three Times Consul. Before becoming emperor, Marcus Aurelius served as a Roman consul (a high government leader) three times, in 140, 145, and 161. This showed he was respected and trusted by Rome's powerful families.
