Created Middle-earth. Tolkien invented an entire world called Middle-earth with its own maps, languages, histories, and different peoples like hobbits, elves, dwarves, and men. He spent decades developing this fantasy world in intricate detail.

Words became worlds. Before becoming famous for his stories, Tolkien was a philologist, which means he was an expert in studying languages. He created the elvish languages first, then built his stories around them, making language central to his imagination.

The Hobbit started it all. His first major book, The Hobbit (1937), was a fantasy adventure about a small creature named Bilbo Baggins. Its huge success led him to write The Lord of the Rings, an even more epic trilogy that became one of the most beloved book series ever.

Oxford don and scholar. Tolkien was a professor of English language and literature at Oxford University for most of his life. He taught while writing his famous stories and was deeply interested in medieval literature and ancient languages.

Inspired by real life. Tolkien drew inspiration from his childhood in the English countryside, his experiences in World War I, and the myths and fairy tales he loved. He believed good stories could bring comfort and meaning to people's lives.
