Ancient Belgian tradition. The Carnival of Binche happens every year in a small town in Belgium during the three days right before Ash Wednesday, a religious holiday. People have been celebrating this carnival for hundreds of years, making it one of Europe's most famous festivals.

Spectacular feathered hats. The most famous carnival-goers wear enormous cone-shaped hats covered with ostrich feathers that can be taller than they are! These amazing hats are so heavy that dancers need special training and help to wear them during the parade.

Three days of fun. The carnival takes place on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, filling the streets with music, dancing, costumes, and celebration. Thousands of people come to watch the parades and join in the festive spirit.

Colorful costumes everywhere. Beyond the feathered hat dancers, people wear all kinds of bright masks, fancy clothes, and creative disguises throughout the carnival. The streets become a rainbow of color and imagination as the whole town celebrates together.

UNESCO recognized. The Carnival of Binche is so special that it's protected by UNESCO as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity, meaning the world considers it incredibly important to preserve.
