Castoroides: The Giant Beaver

Bear-sized builders. Castoroides were giant beavers that grew as large as bears, making them far bigger than the beavers we see today. These massive rodents were among the largest beavers that ever lived.

Pleistocene creatures. These giant beavers lived during the Pleistocene epoch, a time when North America was home to many enormous ice age animals. They shared their world with woolly mammoths, giant ground sloths, and saber-toothed cats.

Two main species. Scientists recognize two species of Castoroides: one lived in the Southeastern United States while the other spread across most of North America. Each adapted to different regions during the ice age.

Master engineers. Like modern beavers, Castoroides were likely skilled builders that constructed dams and lodges, but on a much grander scale due to their enormous size. Their engineering projects would have dramatically changed the landscape.

Fossil clues. We know about Castoroides from fossil remains that show how massive these creatures really were. Scientists continue to study these bones to understand how these giant beavers lived and survived.
