Ancient paint job. The people who lived in the Cave of Altamira made colorful paintings of animals like bison, deer, and horses on the cave walls using charcoal and natural pigments around 36,000 years ago.

Handprints everywhere. Artists didn't just paint animals, they also left prints of their own hands on the cave walls, maybe to say 'I was here' long, long ago.

Pictures of local animals. The paintings show the animals that lived near the cave at that time, helping us understand what the landscape and wildlife looked like back then.

Found by accident. A man named Modesto Cubillas discovered the cave in 1868, and later Marcelino Sanz de Sautuola studied it and figured out how incredibly old the paintings really were.

Hidden in Spain. The cave is located near the town of Santillana del Mar in Cantabria, Spain, making it one of Europe's most important places to learn about early human art.
