Cetus the Whale

Monster of the myths. In ancient Greek stories, Cetus was a terrifying sea creature so dangerous that both Perseus and Heracles, two of the greatest heroes, had to fight it. The constellation was named to honor this legendary beast.

Called the whale. Today we often call Cetus 'the whale' in English, even though the original monster was more like a dragon or sea serpent. It's one of the biggest constellations in the night sky.

Water monster zone. Cetus lives in a special region of the sky surrounded by other water-related constellations like Aquarius, Pisces, and Eridanus. Ancient astronomers grouped them together because they all connect to water and the sea.

Find it at night. You can spot Cetus in the night sky during autumn and winter months in the Northern Hemisphere. Its brightest star, Deneb Kaitos, shines like a marker pointing out this ancient monster's location.
