Chemical Reaction

Atoms rearrange. In a chemical reaction, atoms from different substances break apart and recombine in new ways to create entirely different substances. It's like taking apart LEGO bricks and rebuilding them into something completely new.

Energy gets involved. Chemical reactions often release or absorb energy. When you burn wood, the reaction releases heat and light. Other reactions absorb energy from their surroundings.

You can spot them. Signs of a chemical reaction include color changes, fizzing and bubbling, temperature changes, or new smells. These clues tell you that atoms are rearranging into something brand new.

Reactions are everywhere. Cooking food, rusting metal, your body digesting lunch, and plants making energy from sunlight are all chemical reactions. Chemistry is happening all around you constantly.

Matter stays the same. Even though substances transform, the total amount of atoms never changes, just how they're arranged. It's like having the same ingredients make different meals.
