Controls everything. An operating system is like a manager that controls all the different parts of your computer, from the screen to the keyboard to the files you save. It makes sure everything works together smoothly.

Runs on everything. You probably know about Windows and Mac computers, but operating systems run on almost every device you touch. Your phone, your tablet, your smart TV, and even your video game console all have operating systems.

Helps programs talk. When you want to play a game or use an app, the operating system is the translator between what the program wants to do and what your hardware can actually do. Without it, programmers would have to write a different program for every single computer model.

Keeps files safe. Your operating system organizes all your photos, videos, and documents into folders and files, and it makes sure you can find them whenever you want. It also protects your important stuff from getting lost.

Runs many things at once. While you are watching a video, your operating system might be downloading an email, playing music, and saving a photo all at the same time. It's amazing at juggling lots of tasks without getting confused.
