Candles started it all. Long ago, people lit real candles on Christmas trees to represent Jesus being the light of the world. These flames were a spiritual symbol that lit up the dark winter nights.

German tradition spreads. Christians in early modern Germany brought the custom of decorating trees with lights into their homes. This tradition eventually spread to other countries and became a beloved holiday custom.

From flames to bulbs. Over time, people replaced dangerous candles with safer electric lights and colorful bulbs that could shine brighter and longer without the risk of fire.

Celebration all season long. Christmas lights now decorate homes, trees, and streets throughout the entire Christmas season, from Advent through Christmastide, turning neighborhoods into glowing wonderlands.
