Why pie spelling?. Pi Day is celebrated on 3/14 because the first three digits of pi are 3.14. People eat actual pie on this day because 'pi' sounds just like 'pie,' so mathematicians love the pun!

Birthday of an idea. Pi Day was founded in 1988 by Larry Shaw, who worked at the Exploratorium science museum in San Francisco. He thought it would be cool to celebrate this amazing mathematical number with a special day.

Never-ending number. Pi is a special number that describes the relationship between a circle's distance around (circumference) and its width across (diameter). It goes on forever and never repeats, which makes it super fascinating to mathematicians.
