A famous prediction. Every February 2nd, thousands of people gather to watch a groundhog named Punxsutawney Phil emerge from his burrow. If Phil sees his shadow on that sunny day, legend says winter will continue for six more weeks, but if it's cloudy and he doesn't see his shadow, spring will arrive soon.

From Dutch settlers. This tradition started with Pennsylvania Dutch immigrants who believed groundhogs had special powers to predict the weather. They brought the custom from Europe, where people had watched badgers and hedgehogs on the same day centuries before.

Winter or spring?. The whole idea is based on an old superstition that no one can actually prove works, but people love the fun and excitement of guessing what the weather will do. It's more about tradition and community celebration than real forecasting.

Groundhog biology. Groundhogs, also called woodchucks, really do come out of hibernation around early February to look for food and find mates. So Phil's appearance is actually tied to real animal behavior, even if his shadow predicting abilities are just for fun.
