Mexico's Underdog Win. On May 5, 1862, the Mexican army defeated the Second French Empire at the Battle of Puebla. This was shocking because the French had a much bigger and stronger military, but the Mexican soldiers, led by General Ignacio Zaragoza, won anyway.
A Tricky War. Even though Mexico won this famous battle, France sent more troops and eventually took over Mexico City. The whole conflict lasted years, and Mexico had to fight hard to finally push France out.
America Helped Out. After the American Civil War ended in 1865, the United States started sending money and weapons to help the Mexican Liberals fight against France. This support was a big deal in turning the tide against the French occupation.
The Holiday Today. Mexicans celebrate Cinco de Mayo every year on May 5 to remember that amazing battle and the strength of their nation. It has become a day to celebrate Mexican culture and heritage around the world.
