Written for centuries. Since at least the 9th century, composers have written down classical music using special notation so that musicians around the world can play the exact same pieces.

Complex and intricate. Classical music uses sophisticated arrangements called polyphony, where multiple melodic lines weave together to create rich, layered sounds that are carefully planned by the composer.

Built on tradition. Classical music is distinct from folk music and popular music because it follows formal rules and structures developed over many centuries.

Requires deep study. Music scholars and philosophers have written countless books analyzing and explaining classical music, showing how much thought and study goes into understanding it.

Western art form. While other cultures around the world have their own classical traditions, this refers specifically to the art music tradition that developed in Europe and the Americas.
