Clipper Ships

Super-fast merchants. Clipper ships were special merchant vessels built in the mid-1800s that were designed to be faster than regular cargo ships. They became famous for racing each other across oceans to deliver tea, spices, and other valuable goods.

Sleek hulls. These ships had long, thin hulls and lots of sails to catch the wind, which made them much speedier than the chunky ships that came before. Their streamlined design was perfect for moving quickly through the water.

Global traders. Clippers carried precious cargo like tea from China and spices from India to Europe and America, racing to get there first so merchants could sell their goods before competitors arrived. Speed meant big profits.

Baltimore's invention. Even though clippers became super popular in the mid-1800s, the Baltimore clipper design started earlier, back in the late 1700s in Baltimore, Maryland. These earlier ships proved that sleek designs could be incredibly fast.

Built to win. The most famous clipper races were for tea shipments from China, and sailors loved trying to break speed records. These ships represented the peak of sailing technology before steam engines took over.
