What it does. A clutch is like a mechanical on/off switch for spinning shafts. It lets you connect a motor to a machine when you want it running, and disconnect it when you want to stop without turning off the motor.
Car pedal magic. When you press a car's clutch pedal, you're separating the engine from the wheels so you can shift gears smoothly. Release the pedal and the engine power flows back to the wheels.
Two shafts meeting. Inside a clutch, two spinning shafts can rub against each other through friction to transfer power, or they can separate completely. This happens many times per second as needed.
In factories. Industrial machines use clutches to start and stop their operations safely. A factory worker can engage or disengage a clutch to control when heavy machinery actually starts spinning.
Friction is key. Clutches work because of friction between two surfaces. When they're pressed together tight, friction transfers the spinning motion from one shaft to the other.
