Spiral shape matters. The cochlea looks like a snail shell and makes about 2.75 complete turns around itself. This spiral shape helps fit a lot of sensing area into a super tiny space inside your ear.
Fluid-filled chambers. The cochlea contains different chambers filled with special fluids. When sound waves enter your ear, they make these fluids slosh back and forth, which is the key to how you hear.
Organ of Corti. Deep inside the cochlea sits the organ of Corti, which has thousands of tiny hair cells. These hairs wiggle when the fluid moves, and that wiggling sends electrical messages to your brain about what you're hearing.
Sound to signals. The cochlea is like a translator that turns invisible sound waves into electrical signals your brain can actually understand. Without it, you would hear nothing at all.
Tapered tunnel. The cochlea gets thinner as it spirals around, kind of like a cone. This shape helps different sound frequencies (high and low pitches) get processed in different spots along the spiral.
